Bung Jagoi Heritage Centre Hike is regarded as a hidden gem by local hiking and trail running enthusiasts.
Bung Jagoi is a 357 metre high peak near Bau, just over an hour's drive from Kuching. My wife and I climbed it recently.

It was an enjoyable hike. Dense vegetation, noisy insects and squawking birds gave a real rainforest atmosphere. Experienced hikers rate this as an easy to moderate trail and in some ways it is.

The path is well maintained and there are a lot of concrete steps so there is no chance of getting lost. Actually we found it quite exhausting - perhaps we're getting old (in my seventies now!) Taking our time, we took about 3 hours to the top and back. Quite slow but at least we made it to the end.

We bumped into several docile, placid dogs at various points along the hike. The were very relaxed and caused us no bother.
A termite nest?
Near the top of the hill, 299m above sea level, is a Bidayuh village with this traditional Baruk House. The village was mostly deserted on our visit.

The shop was closed but an enterprising young man was selling drinks next door. Some of the homes in the village have been converted to Homestays.

A simple place of worship called St. Dominic Chapel is found at the village. The priest who officiates here must be very fit if he has to walk up the hill for every service!

Made it to the top! A canine reception committee was waiting for us.

A metal trig marker point marks the highest point on Bung Jagoi.

After reaching the summit we saw a sign pointing towards a viewpoint, which was a short distance away and provided a great panoramic view of the surrounding area.

A new viewing platform and covered sitting area has been built where we could get our breath back before starting the hike back down the hill.

Near the start of the trail was a path to a small waterfall, signposted Air Terjun. It only took five minutes or so. Children were enjoying a swim in the shallow pools and cascades. The water looked clean but you should bear in mind that leptospirosis infection is always a risk in such places in Sarawak.
