Sematan Beach and Sematan Village
Lundu, Sarawak

Sematan Beach and Sematan Village is an attractive coastal area within easy reach of Kuching. Here is what you can expect.

Sematan Village

shophouses along side the waterfront

Sematan is a quaint, sleepy fishing village located where two rivers meet and flow into the South China Sea. These rivers are the Sungai Sebako Besar and the Sungai Serayan Besar, providing a wide, shallow estuary for fishing boats to moor.

traditional wooden shophouse

Traditional wooden shophouses give the village a heritage feel. This one contains the Teck Huat Sematan Kopitiam which serves fresh seafood.

wooden shop frontage

I tried some razor clams here and reminded myself that this is not my favourite type of shellfish. Another time we ate at Habib Café and Seafood which is in a modern building but the food was excellent.

concrete jetty

Sematan Waterfront has a promenade with a small park and children's playground.

There is also a jetty giving fine views of the coastline and village.

semi submerged mangrove trees

Elsewhere in the village is a small army camp, a Chinese temple and a mosque and a new food court (Gerai Makan Sematan) which appeared to be not yet open during our visit.

Sematan Beach

Sematan Beach is dominated by the Roxy Beach Resort comprising a hotel, holiday apartments and townhouses in a prime beachfront location.

We stayed in one of the apartments which was spacious, well equipped and reasonably priced during mid week.

There are two large swimming pools at the resort. The beach itself is wide and clean and, according to one of the employees, is free from crocodiles and is safe for swimming. ATVs, kayaks and paddle boards are available for rent . The resort has its own convenience store which is handy.

The Talang-Talang Islands can be seen on the horizon of the above photo. These islands serve as sanctuaries for Green and Hawksbill Turtles. These islands are closed to tourism and the only way to visit the islands is to join a turtle volunteer programme.

Apart from the Roxy, there are other accommodation choices on this beach including the Sematan Palm Beach Resort and various homestays.
