Bao Ling Shan Cave Temple

small Buddha statue in a cave

Bao Ling Shan Cave Temple (保灵山) is no match for Ipoh's impressive cave temples but it is worth taking a look if you are passing.

While the limestone cave is probably millions of years old, the Buddha statues inside were apparently only added in the past couple of decades and it has developed into a local tourist attraction.

The hill in which the cave is located is actually the same limestone hill feature as the spectacular Fairy Cave which is only about 1km away as the crow flies but is accessed from a different direction.

pond and steps in front of the cave entrance

In front of the cave entrance is a large pond which is teeming with catfish and carp growing fat from the food which tourists give them. Fish food is on sale here.

Access to the mouth of the cave is via a short flight of 30 or so wooden steps. You have to take your shoes off at the foot of the steps and walk up bare foot.

The cave itself is not very large or deep but it is nicely illuminated and the Buddha statues have been arranged attractively in alcoves and on ledges to create a spiritual atmosphere. There is space for Buddhist devotees to make their prayers or offerings. The floor of the cave has been smoothed and levelled and it is comfortable for your bare feet.
