A visit to Orchid Park Kuching is a pleasant way to spend up to an hour wandering amid colourful orchid varieties, bamboo groves and bromeliads. It is walking distance from Kuching Waterfront and admission is free.
This orchid park was opened to the public in 2009 on a 15 acre site close to the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Building (DUN). It replaced an earlier orchid garden which had to be removed when the DUN was constructed.

The Orchid Park is maintained by the Landscape Division of Kuching North City Hall. They claim that the park contains 75,000 orchid plants of 65 genera. The highlight of the Orchid Park is the Borneo Orchid collection which includes local species such as Paphiopedilum Stonei, Paphiopedilum Lowii, Bulbophyllum dearei and Phalaenopsis Bellina.

Pathways wind their way around the park which is arranged into shaded areas, open areas, covered walkways and an orchid cool house. Not many of the orchids were in flower at the time of my visit.

There is also a section showcasing various plants from the bromeliad family.
The entrance building contains a shop for refreshments and souvenirs as well as toilets.
There are better orchid displays in Malaysia such as the Kuala Lumpur Orchid & Hibiscus Garden but this park is pleasant enough and conveniently located and free of charge.
The place is hot and sticky and there are a few mozzies around so bring drinking water and insect repellant.
Open Tuesday to Sunday from 9.30am to 6pm.
Closed on Mondays.

I walked to the Orchid Garden from Kuching Waterfront by crossing the Darul Hana pedestrian bridge, then continuing for a further 500 metres (7 minutes walk) past the Astana.
