Kutien Memorial Park
Sibu, Sarawak

Kutien Memorial Park is an attractive urban park in Sibu with walking/jogging paths, outdoor gym equipment, a large lotus pond and an imposing granite pagoda and other structures.

The pagoda is a scale replica of the 25 metre high solid stone Gek Siong Pagoda (also known as Jixiang Ta), a famous landmark of Gutian (Kutien) County, Fujian Province, China built in 979 A.D. In 1958, during the construction of the Shuikou Dam hydro project which submerged old Gutian City, the pagoda was relocated to Pagoda Mountain (Tashan) in the new city.

Gutian County is the ancestral homeland of the Kutien Chinese diaspora and this replica honours the cultural roots of the community.

An inscription on the pagoda tells us that that Kutien Memorial Park was jointly built by Persatuan Kutien Sarawak and the Sibu Municipal Council in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Persatuan Kutien Sarawak and dated 8 July 2004.

Another inscription tells the history of how people from this Foochow speaking district of China came to migrate to Sibu in large numbers around the early 1900s. It describes the hardships and struggles of those early years.
