Bukit Lima Nature Reserve is a large area of peat swamp forest on the fringe of Sibu city. Although the area was logged decades ago, some large trees remain and, now that it is under the protection of Sarawak Forestry Corporation, a regeneration of forest species is occurring, giving the park a lush feel. More than 40 species of forest trees are thriving here. It is also said to be home to 39 species of birds and 8 types of mammals but they must have all been taking a nap during my visit!

According to an information board, peat swamp forest is rich in plant and forest species. Peat swamp forest once covered 12% of the total landmass of Sarawak but now only a small percentage of Sarawak's original peat swamp area is still naturally forested which is why Bukit Lima is so precious.

Two wooden boardwalk loops totalling 5.7km in length have been constructed around the Reserve allowing visitors to observe the trees and plants up close while at the same time protecting the vegetation and wildlife from our tramping feet.

It's a big job to build and maintain over 5 kilometres of boardwalk. The management are to be commended for their work in replacing rotting planks where necessary.

The main loop is 3.2km long and there is an extension of 2.5km for those requiring more exercise.

Some visitors have described these as jogging trails but actually signs warn that the plank walks are for walking only and no running or jogging allowed. Presumably the action of running damages the wooden planks. No matter, walking is sufficient exercise, especially in the hot and humid conditions.

750 metres covered so far

Distance markers have been attached to the planks every 50 metres so you can keep track of your progress.

The viewing tower has great views from the top.

What to Bring

  • The section of the trail from the car park to the Viewing Tower is very exposed with little shade so sun protection is a must.
  • Also bring insect repellent and drinking water.
  • An umbrella or raincoat too if showers are likely.
  • Good footwear - the plank walks can be slippery when wet.
