Sarawak State Library & Park
Pustaka Negeri Sarawak

white library building overlooking the lake

Sarawak State Library and Park is a great place for the whole family. I went there recently and was quite impressed. First of all there is the grandiose library building itself with a cool, spacious and calming interior, ideal for the quiet enjoyment of their large collection of books. And outside, in front of the library is a large lake surrounded by an attractive landscaped park with paths, exercise equipment and playgrounds.

The Library

The entrance lobby of the library features this grand staircase with glass steps.

illuminated blue information boards inside the library

The library's vast size reflects the ambition of the Sarawak Government to cultivate an interest in reading among the local population.

study area and bookshelves inside the main library

I was surprised to see the wide range of books available for borrowing, many of them in English. It was just a pity that the library's facilities seemed to be under-utilised on the day of my visit.

Members are allowed to borrow up to 10 items at any one time for a period of 14 days. In addition to physical books the library has extensive digital collections and online services.

The Park and Gardens

Between the car park and library main entrance is a large tree with swings hanging from it and charming bronze statues of six children at play.

wooden pergola and planting in the sensory garden

On the western side of the park is the Sensory Garden where various edible or fragrant plant species are growing. Elsewhere is a herb garden and a community garden.

palm trees and water feature

The landscaping of the park is so neat you might think you are at a golf course.

car tyres painted to resemble a snake

A fun and creative use of old tyres.

shoal of small orange and yellow carp

Colourful carp congregated under a bridge hoping I was going to feed them.

Viewed from the far end of the lake the impressive scale of the library building is apparent.

kiddies' play area and tree house

Nice treehouse and children's playground.
